What to expect
Main thing is to just show up
Going to counselling for the first time can feel daunting, like there may be something expected of you. There isn't, other than just showing up.
Here is the thing though, you do not need to arrive knowing what you want to say. Most people do not. There is no pressure to tell your whole story at once.
Usually we begin with whatever stuckness felt urgent enough to bring you here, what it is that feels painful or confusing.
In conversation we will soon see whether there is a good fit between you and I. This part is important.
In early sessions, we may explore:
- What has been going on in your life recently.
- What you have been carrying for perhaps too long.
- Patterns in relationships, emotions, or behaviour that feel like stuck records.
- What you are hoping might be different.
You can begin to make sense of your internal world, and begin to notice how this translates to your world outside. Sometimes this involves practical strategies; other times it involves deeper exploration of relationships or past experiences.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if counselling is right for me?
If something in your life feels stuck, overwhelming, or difficult to navigate alone, counselling can help. You do not need a diagnosis or a serious enough problem to start.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is usually about getting to know you and what brings you in. We will talk about what has been going on, what you would like support with, and what you hope might change.
How long does counselling take?
It varies. Some people come for short-term focused work, while others stay longer for deeper exploration. We can review this together as we go.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes. What you share is confidential, with a few legal and ethical exceptions, for example if there is risk of serious harm. These limits will be explained clearly at the start.
What if I am nervous or unsure about starting?
That is completely normal. Many people feel that way before their first session. You do not need to be ready in advance, just willing to begin.
