About me

Practical and deeply human counselling

I am a husband and father of three children, these being two adult men and the other a teenage daughter. I am a reader of books, proficient in dawdling around in nature with dogs, an infamously experimental DJ, hands-on home renovator with a semi-organised workshop in which I am known to avidly dismantle kitchen appliances.

I have been involved in various occupations in my time. I have entrepreneured my own retail business, spent a decade in the trenches in journalism, and most recently, a dozen years of life and addictions recovery coaching, with a side serving of people skills training.

I have experienced a wide variety of life's curve balls, both sudden and earned. I have returned to working with people, which is where it all started out.

My natural strengths lie in connecting deeply and creatively with people, in a non-judgmental therapeutic zone. My intention is to co-create a space for you to explore, integrate and embody perspectives and, importantly, find hope.

I am curious about understanding the relationship between thought, feeling and action in a way that encourages personal meaning.

Right now, I’m endeavouring to welcome the changes of midlife, trusting that they can become a powerful imperative for renewal.

Qualifications

My most recent qualification is with the South African College of Applied Psychology, where I completed my Bachelor of Psychology Equivalent Honours programme with cum laude and a Dean's Merit Award.

That makes me a registered counsellor with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), the regulatory body for professionals.

I started this academic journey back in the early 1990s, with an honours in clinical psychology from Rhodes University. I have also completed a UCT course in executive coaching and am registered as an Inner Life Skills professional life coach.

Along the way, I encountered Tension and Trauma Release Exercise, TRE, a body-oriented practice that worked well for me in reducing anxiety and stress. So I studied to become a practitioner.
